The Start of Islam Out of the many interesting religions of the Far East Islam has quite a uniqueness to it. The name, Islam stems from the word â€Å"salam,† that means peace. The word â€Å"Muslim,† which means a follower of Islam, refers to a person who submits him or her self to the will of God. Many religious experts believe that the prophet Muhammad founded Islam in the year 622 CE. Muhammad was believed to have lived from 570-632 CE. This particular religion started when the angel Jibreel read the first revelation to Muhammad. We know already that the followers of Islam are called Muslims. The Muslims believe in the â€Å"one true God,† which they call Allah. Muhammad was born in the year 570 CE. When he was growing up, he was†¦show more content†¦Because of this, in 622 he moved to Medina, which was north. During his time in Medina, Muhammad had much trouble trying to get his message across to the Jews. Muhammad, through many troubles, by discussion, persuasion, an d political discussion became a very powerful leader in Arabia. From then on Islam was very established throughout the area. After many years, Islam had expanded to India, China, and as far down as Spain by 750 CE. There are two very important books for Islam, like the Bible is for Christians. They are called the Qur’an, and the Hadith. The Qur’ra means the words of God, it is mostly spelled Koran in English. The Hadith is mostly collections of the proverbs or saying of Muhammad. They are supposed to be a very good guide for living the Islam life. From these books, Islam has many beliefs and practices. A Muslim has certain duties, five of them. These duties are called the Five Pillars of Islam. They are 1) to say the shahadah, a Muslim creed at least once during their lifetime. 2) They are to perform a prayer called the salt five times a day. It is done in the morning, at noon mid-afternoon, after sunset, and prior to sleeping. 3) To donate to charity regularly by the zakat. Muslims should make donations when ever the feel the need to. 4) During the month of Ramadan, the Muslims are to fast. Social work is such an important part of the communal functioning of society. I believe there is a great need that policies and laws often neglect to address. I am pursuing a degree in social work because I wear the face of vulnerability. I am a young, black, and educated woman living in a time where discrimination is still apparent. If everyone was given an equal chance and the opportunity for change, I believe we can create a powerhouse of knowledge and greater awareness for the human in humanity. My background is in criminology and I wanted to pursue a degree outside of my field in order to take a comprehensive approach to how I saw and understood the world. Nature was a creative force that contained the ability to either kill them or keep them alive with no preference for the human’s opinion. As humankind formed society and began to exert their own force against nature, and nature became â€Å"a social creation as much as it is the physical universe† (TB 107) as this balance of power shifted unknowingly into the hands of humans. Nanotechnology in the automotive idustry Essay ABSTRACT This report was commissioned to investigate the current and future trends of nanotechnology in the automotive industry. Furthermore, its purpose is to ascertain whether it is necessary, and how it could be achieved for students undertaking a BSc (Nanotechnology) at Curtin University to be equipped to work in the automotive industry. To investigate this issue a wide and varied multimedia research task was undertaken to fully identify all the factors involved. A report was then compiled detailing the findings and the recommendations that arose from the research. The results indicate that there is a fast growing trend of nanotechnology in the automotive industry, that has started already and is moving rapidly. By 2010 nanotechnology will represent a significant portion of the industry, and will be vitally important to everyone involved, especially the large automotive companies. There are many exciting job prospects in this highly profitable field for experts in nanotechnology, therefore it is recommended that the BSc (Nanotechnology) offered at Curtin University be adapted to include two new units. The first will be run in first year in collaboration with the Curtin Business School, and will offer students a chance to learn about the business side of the automotive industry. They will learn how to manage companies, and fit in with large ones, in a business sense. The second unit will be offered in third year, when students have a solid foundation of physics, chemistry and nanotechnology. It will be a unit shared with the appropriate engineering degrees and taught by the engineering staff. The unit will give students a thorough understanding of conventional engines and car production procedures. They will then have a good idea of how to adapt their vast knowledge of nanotechnology to the process. It has ramifications across all many industrials areas, including the automotive industry. As the field develops and the technology advances, the applications in conventional areas will broaden. Therefore, it is essential that those studying nanotechnology today be properly equipped to affect, and adapt to, these changes. The term nanotechnology is not clearly defined. There are many different definitions, and meanings. However, it is often described as either, future nanosystems, including nano assemblers and robots, or as a broad term meaning any current technology which deals with small systems. To be small enough to be considered as nanotechnology, the system must have at least one dimension of less than 100 nanometres. The following definition of nanotechnology by Drexler, states, There are two sorts of ;nanotechnology;, which should not be confused. The first is a long-term objective of productive nanosystems, small devices that build complex structures, both large and small, with atomic precision. The second is a label for a broad collection of ongoing research activities, many in the area of materials science. My work is in the former area.'(E Drexler pers comm. 2005) The automotive industry could see large benefits, from both areas in the present and near future. So if these changes are coming, how do we equip our nanotechnology students to deal with, or implement them? There are many options discussed below, all have associated pros and cons, however it is clear that something must be done, and soon. 2 Automotive nanotechnology today 2.1 The second type of nanotechnology, as described by Drexler in the introduction, is already in use within the automotive industry.
