Essay on The Start of Islam - 744 Words
The Start of Islam Out of the many interesting religions of the Far East Islam has quite a uniqueness to it. The name, Islam stems from the word ââ¬Å"salam,â⬠that means peace. The word ââ¬Å"Muslim,â⬠which means a follower of Islam, refers to a person who submits him or her self to the will of God. Many religious experts believe that the prophet Muhammad founded Islam in the year 622 CE. Muhammad was believed to have lived from 570-632 CE. This particular religion started when the angel Jibreel read the first revelation to Muhammad. We know already that the followers of Islam are called Muslims. The Muslims believe in the ââ¬Å"one true God,â⬠which they call Allah. Muhammad was born in the year 570 CE. When he was growing up, he wasâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Because of this, in 622 he moved to Medina, which was north. During his time in Medina, Muhammad had much trouble trying to get his message across to the Jews. Muhammad, through many troubles, by discussion, persuasion, an d political discussion became a very powerful leader in Arabia. From then on Islam was very established throughout the area. After many years, Islam had expanded to India, China, and as far down as Spain by 750 CE. There are two very important books for Islam, like the Bible is for Christians. They are called the Qurââ¬â¢an, and the Hadith. The Qurââ¬â¢ra means the words of God, it is mostly spelled Koran in English. The Hadith is mostly collections of the proverbs or saying of Muhammad. They are supposed to be a very good guide for living the Islam life. From these books, Islam has many beliefs and practices. A Muslim has certain duties, five of them. These duties are called the Five Pillars of Islam. They are 1) to say the shahadah, a Muslim creed at least once during their lifetime. 2) They are to perform a prayer called the salt five times a day. It is done in the morning, at noon mid-afternoon, after sunset, and prior to sleeping. 3) To donate to charity regularly by the zakat. Muslims should make donations when ever the feel the need to. 4) During the month of Ramadan, the Muslims are to fast.
